Did William Carey compose hymns? I would have answered no till last night when Jack Chen, the Pastor of the Carey Baptist Church in Kolkata informed me otherwise. I then came across this statement in a letter Carey wrote to his good friend John Sutcliff on January 16, 1798—Carey is describing the worship service he leads and he states: “we sing Bengali hymns, which I have composed, in the style of Sternhold and Hopkins” [cited Eustace Carey, Memoir of William Carey, D.D. (London: Jackson and Walford, 1836), 323].
